Tell SCLC To Cease Actions Against LGBT-Affirming Reverend

Rev. Lee opposes discrimination where he sees it, noting "Any time you deny a group of people the same rights that other groups have, that is clear violation of civil rights".

Dear MCC Friends and Family:

We want to urge you to join with our leadership in supporting Rev. Eric Lee, the Los Angeles chapter president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Rev. Lee took a courageous stand, consistent with SCLC tradition, in coming out in support of Marriage Equality, during the Proposition 8 campaign in California last year. Now, it seems, his job may be on the line. Let's join with our friends at the National Black Justice Coalition in expressing our concerns.

It is so important for us to speak up and out for those who risk their jobs to support us. Now we need to support someone who supported us!

Action Alert

Tell the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to Cease Actions Against an LGBT-Affirming Reverend

Rev. Eric Lee is the President of the Los Angeles chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a civil rights organization founded by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He has become an outspoken advocate for Marriage Equality, and was particularly visible during protests against California's Proposition 8.  The SCLC is now seeking a hearing, demanding that Rev. Lee explain his positions, and the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) believes that he is in imminent danger of being fired for his actions in support of marriage equality.

The NBJC asserts that Rev. Lee should be praised and supported for his support of LGBT rights - yet instead, it would seem that he is in danger of disciplinary actions that may include losing his job.

We invite you to take a moment to send the SCLC a message in support of Rev. Lee, his work and his accomplishments by  clicking the following link
http://ga4.org/campaign/sclc_July09.

It is the position of the NBJC that the SCLC should not create an employment environment that gives way to discrimination based on one's personal values and beliefs. The loss of income to Rev. Lee and his family, particularly in these economic times, reflects the daily risk that LGBT people and our straight allies face in demanding equal rights for all.

We ask that you send the Dr. Byron Clay, president of the SCLC a letter in support of Rev. Lee, and call on the SCLC to rise to the occasion of supporting LGBT rights as part of our civil right!
